The European Union and Schengen
Twenty-seven countries are in the European Union. Twenty-nine are in the Schengen Area, with no passport checks between them. Twenty-five are in both. Ireland opted out of Schengen and Cyprus has not yet joined, which leaves two EU members outside it. Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland are in Schengen without being in the EU.
The euro is a third circle again: 21 of the 27 use it, Bulgaria since January 2026. Drawn with all three the picture is nearly all overlap, so this page keeps to the two that people confuse.
